How Long Does DMT Stay in Your Body System?

DMT or say Dimethyltryptamine is popularly known as a psychedelic compound that buds up naturally in plants of a particular category. In the human body, it has been said that there have been some traces of DMT. This can lead to causing hallucinations in humans. The effect of DMT stays only for a short period. The primary hallucinogenic component present in ayahuasca tea is DMT. It is prepared from the same name of South American plant. If you go to the United States, you can easily found DMT selling as a white or yellow crystalline powder. In some areas, it is sold under the street name of Dimitri that can also be synthetically produced.

According to the research and report prepared by The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), it has been found that DMT belongs to the category of Schedule I drug. This drug is illegal to be used because it has a high potential for abuse. This type of medicine cannot be tested as other standard drugs are screened. But, some tests can be initiated in its testing and detecting the outcomes.

Let’s study about DMT longevity

Dimethyltryptamine works directly on serotonin receptors present in the brain. In comparison to other hallucinogens namely LSD, DMT is found very quick in causing effects if administered by smoking or sniffing. This drug is also preferred by many to be taken through a vaporizer or rolling its powder with cannabis, tobacco, or other herbs. In a few cases, this drug is administered through injection.

One can easily visualize hallucinations and auditory distortions even if DMT is taken in a small quantity. In the time span of 45 seconds, the user can reach at the peak level for the first five minutes. The effect of DMT usually lasts not more than 30 to 45 minutes depending on the person, dosage, and drug administration. Due to this effect, this drug has also got a nickname registered in the name of “businessman’s lunch trip”.

DMT produces no effect if someone administers it orally because this drug broke down quickly with the help of monoamine oxidase present in the digestive tract. To make the oral administration active, DMT is often taken with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that produces a very longer effect on the user. The effects usually lasts for around three hours.

What effect does DMT has on the brain?

The main effects that are caused by taking DMT are hallucinations and euphoria. Other effects of DMT are agitation, increased heart rate, and hallucinations. Use of this drug can also make the user vulnerable. In case, a user has taken ayahuasca, then he or she can unlikely suffer severe vomiting too.

Several side effects may also take place upon taking DMT for being as a hallucinogen. Use of DMT can produce certain chemicals in the brain leading to mood sensory perception, sleep, hunger, and muscle control. DMT and other hallucinogens are strictly not advised in people with schizophrenia or similar mental health conditions. Do not take DMT if you have a family history of these conditions. According to a few reports, it has been suggested that DMT and ayahuasca act as triggers to severe psychotic episodes.

There has been a statement made by The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that states that, like most of the hallucinogens, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is not addictive, even though research is needed. If someone wants to take higher amounts of DMT, then a user must develop a tolerance level that sometimes leads to the risk of overdose.

How to prevent an overdose in the user?

As per the research by NIDA, if DMT is taken in high dosages, then it may lead to producing the following effects:

•    Hallucinations
•    Memory loss
•    Cardiac and respiratory arrest
•    Physical distress, including dangerous changes in blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and body temperature
•    Marked psychological distress, including feelings of extreme panic, fear, anxiety, paranoia, invulnerability, exaggerated strength, and aggression

Adding more to this, it has also been found that the use of DMT along with a combination of alcohol and other central nervous system depressants may cause respiratory distress or arrest and even death.

Drug Testing

In the human body, DMT gets metabolized instantly. Many tests are run on common hallucinogens. Only a few amounts of it could be traced after their immediate use. It is quite difficult to reach conclusions. DMT is not detected to be used for law enforcement, employment, and treatment purposes.
